Obtaining a Virginia Marriage License
Marriage licenses in Virginia are issued by the Clerk of the Circuit Court. Couples may apply at any Circuit Court in Virginia, regardless of where they live.
The marriage must take place within the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Applications are by appointment only and require online pre-application before appearing in person.
Photo Identification
Both applicants must present valid photo identification, such as:
- U.S. driver’s license or state-issued ID
- Passport
- U.S. military ID
- All identification must be current and clearly legible.
Complete the Marriage License Application
- Marriage license applications must be completed online prior to scheduling an in-person appointment.
- After submitting the online application, applicants will receive an email to schedule their appointment.
- Important: This email may be sent from an automated address and could appear in spam or junk folders.
- At this time, Virginia Circuit Courts issue marriage licenses in person only.
Eligibility & Requirements
- Both parties must be at least 18 years old
- No residency requirement applies
- No blood tests or witnesses are required
- Marriage licenses are valid for 60 days from the date of issuance

- The Virginia marriage license fee is approximately $30
- Fees may be paid by cash or credit card
- Credit card payments may include a service fee

- Marriage licenses are issued for license purposes only — ceremonies are not performed at the courthouse.
